Her latest book, a novella called Child of Fear and Fire, will be released on the 28th of September, 2021.
Q&A:
Q1: What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a novella. It’s called Child of Fear and Fire. This was inspired by my new love of gothic horror, things that are darker and not always a happy ending. I wanted a protagonist who was troubled, imperfect, one that had so called inner demons to deal with.
Q2:
What are five words
that describe your writing process?
Pantser, dreamer, evolving, slow, researcher
Q3: What authors, or books have influenced you?
Becky Wright, Beverley Lee, Philippa Gregory, Ken Follett
Q4: What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
White
noise. I don’t like writing in silence. I actually love writing in cafes.
Q5. What, to you, are the most important elements of good writing?
Reading a lot, particularly the genre you’re writing in. Also, researching to have that believability factor, even with fantasy writing. Things need to make sense and have an anchor for the reader to get hold of.
Q6: What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Network, network, network! Also, as previously said, read widely and often, particularly the genre in which you’re writing.
Q7: What is your favourite genre to read?
I love paranormal fantasy, historical fiction and gothic horror. Can’t split them
Q8: What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?
Characters evolve first, then plot. I think I get a character in mind and think on their situation, the how and why of who they are. The plot then develops to explain them, and take them on a journey.
Q9: What are you working on now?
A new full length dark gothic fantasy with more of a tilt towards horror. This story has been rolling around my mind for a few years.
Q10: What are you currently reading?
I’m
reading Autumn by Melissa Nash and The Mandala Chronicles by Jordan Wright
Below is an exerpt from Child of Fear and Fire, available 28th September.
Fear feeds Wickedness.
It hungers
for the tremor of a voice, the drop of a tear. Wickedness dines on the echo of
a racing heart, delights in the falsetto of a scream.
Eliza lives darkness’s dream. A maid in a great
house, owned by indifferent aristocrats, run by their three cruel daughters.
Daily beatings, tricks and cruelties by the Norlane
sisters have left Eliza a mute shell, a vacant vessel besieged by fear. Yet,
alone as she feels, as small and insignificant as her life seems, something is
watching her.
Darkness lives in the forbidden forest beyond the
neat and orderly civility of Norlane Hall. Wickedness hears Eliza’s silent
tears, rises to the vibrations of her body that quivers in terror.
Wickedness awakens from its slumber and calls to
her.
